The Old 283 Pistons Are Looking A little Worn

Although the block had little wear, the pistons were showing damage from running too much of a rich mixture. Since the pistons need replacing, it is only practical to bore the cylinder walls. They will be .060 oversized making this engine 292 cu.

The Cylinder walls look Really Good For A 1964 Engine

These walls have very little wear. .001 to .0015 out of round wear and the same taper wear. It could get by with honing, but the pistons look a little rough, so a new bore will be the right thing to do.

Nothing Says Old School Like A 283 Chevy Engine

This is an all original 1964 283 Chevy engine. It looks good compared to a lot of engines this age. The block is the original 3.875 bore. I have not checked the crank to see if it is original size. This is a factory 220 hp engine. It will need to go to the machine shop for hot tanking and magnafluxing. Since this is a low cost build, hopefully the cylinders will clean up with just honing and rebore will not be necessary. The heads will need new seats installed for unleaded fuel. This purchase was $150.00.

Now it's time to find a good turbo 350 transmission.

Project Cost To Date Is $400.00

It's Time To Build A Hot Rod

A good start is a 1955 Chevrolet 1st Series truck frame. This will be a fun build. Very little will be bought retail, so I guess it will be a budget built hot rod. This frame with the straight axle, gear box, rear end and rims was purchased for 250.00
